Time Signatures

Time signatures

Time signatures contain two numbers.

  • The top number indicates the number of beats in each bar.
  • The bottom number is a code for what the beat is measured in.

The common codes for the bottom number are:

  • 4 = crotchet beats
  • 8 = quaver beats
  • 2 = minim beats

Time signature Description
Image: notation of 4/4 time signature
This means there are four crotchet beats in each bar.
Image: notation of 6/8 time signature
This means there are six quaver beats in each bar.
Image: notation of 2/2 time signature
This means there are two minim beats in each bar.

Treble and Bass clef Notes

The notes on the treble clef look like this:
